People often ask us "Why should I add my manager to Fellow?".

In this article, we'll highlight 4 benefits of inviting your manager:

Additional features in 1-on-1s (feedback, suggested topics)

If there is a reporting relationship established (manager - direct report), then that 1-on-1 note will come with additional features. Across the top, you'll have Feedback in addition to the usual Meeting Notes and Action Items.

If you are on the Enterprise plan, the feedback tab will be a collection of all that direct report's feedback, which comes in handy during performance review cycles.

And to top all of that off, there are some suggested topics on the right hand side. These from our question bank and when you click on one of these suggested topics, they'll be automatically added to the agenda. And hopefully provoke thoughtful conversation.

Share a collaborative set of notes and build a source of truth

When you think about it, it's pretty inefficient for each person to take their own notes. And besides the inefficiency, after the meeting both people will be working off their own filtered notes as opposed to one single source of truth.

If you invite your manager, you can build a collaborative document/record of your 1-on-1 and you can also have a shared notes for all the meetings that both of you are apart of. This is especially useful with action items so that they aren't forgotten.

Share feedback with your manager

With Fellow's feedback functionality, you'll be able to exchange feedback with your teammates. If a team member shares a bit of feedback that you're particularly proud of, you'll have the option to directly share this piece of feedback with your manager.

And even better, this piece of feedback will show up in your 1-on-1 section so when it's time for performance reviews you'll have a complete record without recency bias.

Get prompted before your next 1-on-1

Before 1-on-1 meetings, Fellow sends out notifications via Slack or email notifying you of an upcoming 1-on-1 and prompting you to add to the agenda.

This might help prevent a mad dash scramble to add to your 1-on-1 agenda 15 minutes before the meeting starts.

Feel free to customize these notification settings in User Settings --> Notifications.
